From Gray to Grounding: A Sensory Sanctuary
Design Challenge
The original bedroom was designed without consideration for the child’s sensory needs.
The space was dominated by gray tones, minimal lighting, and furniture that didn’t cater to comfort or safety.
The environment felt uninviting, lacking the warmth and sense of security essential for a child with sensory sensitivities.
Our challenge was to transform this cold and neutral room into a welcoming, sensory-supportive space where the child
could feel both calm and secure.
Design Solution
To create a room that supports sensory well-being, we focused on color, lighting, and thoughtfully chosen furnishings.
By incorporating sensory-friendly elements, we crafted an environment that balances warmth with functionality, allowing
the child to feel at ease and engaged.
•Color Light Therapy: Installed adjustable lighting that allows the child to change colors, supporting therapeutic use
of light to influence mood and relaxation.
•Calming Color Scheme: Replaced the gray tones with soft, warm hues that enhance comfort and create a peaceful atmosphere.
•Sensory Seating: Added an enclosed seating nook designed to simulate a hug, offering a safe, cocoon-like space for grounding
and emotional support.
•Child-Specific Furniture: Chose furniture that supports the child’s sensory and functional needs, including open shelving to
organize items in a visually accessible way.
•Safety-Focused Details: Ensured all elements were designed for ease of use and safety, providing a nurturing environment
that fosters independence while feeling secure.
This transformation showcases how intentional design, rooted in an understanding of sensory needs, can convert a simple
bedroom into a sanctuary—a personalized space where the child can find calm, feel safe, and experience the joy of a room
tailored just for them.
